DUNES DAY 2012

Dunes Day for me is a tragic day of changes not only for all dune riders but any person visiting the Imperial Sand Dunes. The new year brings new changes to the Imperial Sand Dunes.  Changes that affect frequent visitors but also tourism. Changes in California Law effect residents of California and some that are 15 minutes away from the dunes people who live in Yuma.

For over 15 years we have been renting ATVs and now Side-by- sides and some of our customers go to  the Imperial Sand Dunes.  There have been several changes since then like helmet laws, flag and EPA approved gas cans, some not so lightly taken. The latest of the changes comes to affect the families who come to the Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area. Families who have children under 12 had a difficult time taking younger kids into the dunes with out the purchase of expensive or investing in converting a regular truck into a off-road or dunning vehicle.  Most of the latest side-by-side off-road equipment sold  now can come in the option of having 2 or 4 seats.  This seems an awesome option for the traditional riding family. Stick your kids in the side-by-side and go. Unfortunately all the  thousands of Dunners that have converted their 2 seat UTV to a 4 seat UTV can no longer take it to the Dunes. Neither can the hundreds of families that recently purchased a 4 Seat UTV.

When we had the time, we were able to take our kids in the sand dunes it was for them one of the greatest time. Imagine being 5 years old going to the top of the biggest sand box this side of the continent.  We never had the ability to take them there before, because our personal riding off-road vehicles were only ATVs.  It was nice and fun to be able to share what we had enjoyed as kids.  It made it really nice because they could go into the dunes with us and save ourselves lots of money by not hiring a babysitter.

As of January 1, 2012 a new California Law came into effect, and this effects not only families enjoying time out at the Imperial Sand Dunes but anyone visiting California and those who live in it. California passed a law that requires children under 8 to be in a booster or  car seat.  That means NO riders under 8 years of age in a side-by-side.

Not only are kids not allowed to ride in a side by side  there is also a carseat law in effect. It also means kids under 8 will not be able to go into the sand dunes unless they are in a regular vehicle, no sand rails, no side-by-side.  This personally is upsetting. I console myself by telling myself,  I would hate to have lost a child because, it flew out of the seat at the sand dunes. There is a time for everything, I am sure the sand dunes will be there when they get older. (gulp)

This also means that Arizonans or families visiting California would have to have their kids in a booster seat.

Families traveling from  Yuma, Arizona going to El Centro for a trip to The El Centro Valley Mall, make sure you have your kids in booster seat before you get a ticket.
