RV Travel Tips

Spending time with our love ones is the reason why we travel. We connect with each other and with nature. It is important to have the quality time and avoid any mishaps if possible.

Here are a few RV Travel Tips to help travel safely.

  • Take the time to check your RV and make sure it is fully functioning at least 3 weeks in advance.  Just in case you have a part that need to be swapped you have enough time to ensure it is ordered, delivered, and installed.
  • Install a deadbolt door lock on your RV. Make sure all keys and spares are creatively hidden, just in case you get locked out.
  • Inspect all belts,, hoses for cracking especially radiator hoses.
  • Make sure to check your maintenance records. If you don’t have one then create one. Stick it in a binder and bring that with you.
  • Check your headlights, and turn signals.
  • Tires need to be checked. Check the tire’s pressure, and tread. Take a tire gage with you to check your tires while traveling.
  • Check your towing equipment.
  • Go over your insurance policy and make any adjustments while traveling. Especially if you are going into a different country like Canada or Mexico.
  • Research conditions of the water, weather and amenities, of the locations you will be visiting to insure you have the necessities.
  • Check or swap out any water filters in your RV.
  • Check your fire extinguisher and smoke alarms.
  • Check your cooking vent hood to avoid grease fires.  Clean the vent, and make sure to bring a degreasing cleaning solution with you if you plan on going for a long trip.
  • Check your propane tank. Check it for leaks, and check to see if they need to be refilled.
  • Leave an itinerary with relatives or friends in case of an emergency.  This can be so easily overlooked. Never leave a trip without telling anyone where you are going. If your plans change let someone know.
  • Check under your rig for any leaking fluids.
  • If you own a smart phone check out any popular travel apps that might be helpful on your app store.
  • Make a list of questions you need to know the answer to and find out before you go on your trip.
  • When packing your RV for your trip make sure to consider your weight distribution. Check the weight at any of the local truck stops to make sure you are not over capacity.
